Doing their journey in Canada

About them

We’re Barry and Mark, and we live in Toronto with our Boston Terrier, Peanut!

Relationship status

Married

We’ve been together since January of 2016, when we met a few short weeks after Barry moved to Toronto from his hometown of Cork in Ireland. After chatting for a few weeks, we went on our first date (Barry was hopelessly underdressed, experiencing his first Canadian Winter!), and immediately sparked. A year later we were living together, a year after that we welcomed our dog Peanut into our burgeoning family, and a year after that, in front of our family and friends from both sides of the Atlantic, we married here in Toronto.

Already avid travelers before we met, we’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some amazing places together since we’ve been together- from Mexico to Vietnam to Morocco , as well as our honeymoon driving along the Mediterranean coast of Spain (and several trips back to Ireland to visit Barry’s family!).

We bought our first home in 2022, a small fixer upper here in the city, and have spent the past few years making it a real home for the two of us and Peanut, and look forward to bringing a baby into this home too. Our home office is perfect for a little nursery, and we’re all set to start redecorating for when that day comes. :)

Financial preparedness

We fully understand and respect that surrogacy in Canada is an altruistic process, and we are committed to ensuring that our surrogate is never left out of pocket because of their incredibly generous decision to help us build our family. With a clear and open mind, we have realistically budgeted for the surrogate's journey, and are fully prepared to cover eligible reimbursable expenses, including medical costs, lost wages, childcare, pregnancy clothing , travel and other pregnancy-related expenses, with the understanding that unexpected medical circumstances may require additional support.

We want our surrogate to feel comfortable seeking reimbursement for all genuine and legitimate costs, while also approaching the process in good faith, and we would value openness, honesty and reasonable stewardship of the reimbursement process. Ultimately we believe that mutual trust, transparency, and respect will help create a positive experience for everyone involved.

What they're looking for
Their hopes and requirements for a surrogate
Requirements

We are hoping to be matched with a surrogate who prioritizes a fairly healthy lifestyle, and is committed to maintaining healthy pregnancy habits. Our preferences include someone with a stable home environment and a strong supportive personal network, who is a non-smoker (and does not use any nicotine products, has a BMI that supports a healthy pregnancy, has already had at least one successful pregnancy, and is aged no older than 45. However, we recognize that every surrogate is unique, and these preferences simply reflect what we would feel most comfortable with as intended parents, but are happy to be considered by people who don't necessarily fit this exact profile.

Vaccination information

We place a high value on evidence-based medical care, and trust the guidance of qualified medical and healthcare professionals throughout pregnancy. We hope to be matched to a surrogate who shares this approach, and is comfortable following medical recommendations that are intended to support the health and well-being of the pregnancy and the baby. This includes any vaccinations or treatments that are recommended during pregnancy for the benefit of the baby, unless there is a medical reason not to do so. At the same time, we respect that our surrogate has autonomy over their own body and medical decisions, and we would never seek to override them or pressure them regarding their own personal healthcare choices. Ultimately, we want to approach this journey with our surrogate with trust, open communication, and the shared goal of giving the baby the healthiest start in life.

Views on termination

We understand that decisions regarding termination are deeply personal and often incredibly difficult. We believe that any decision should be made thoughtfully, compassionately, and in consultation with medical professionals. If prenatal testing or medical evaluation were to reveal a condition that would significantly affect the child's quality of life, such as a serious genetic or chromosomal disorder, or a major physical abnormality, we would be inclined to consider termination.

We know that these situations are very emotionally complex, and we respect that a surrogate has autonomy on their own body, and we would never pressure them into a procedure that would leave them feeling vulnerable. However, our hope is to match with a surrogate whose views on these difficult circumstances are broadly aligned with our own, so that, if an unexpected situation were to arise, we could approach it with open communication, respect, and a shared understanding.

Interests and hobbies

Being a designer, I have a huge passion for art and creativity, and love to refurbish antique pieces of furniture (amateurly). I love to cook (I find it relaxing at the end of the work day) and love to experiment with new recipes and ideas. I’ve recently gotten into gardening since we bought our house in Toronto, and am on a mission to have the biggest hydrangeas in the city! I’m a big theatre fan, and love an evening out at a play or the opera. (Side note : I spent several years in the Irish National youth orchestra, playing the clarinet, so I have a passion for the symphony and try and go as much as I can.) I’m also a huge reader, as is Mark, so we’re both matched in our love of book and our quest to find the next great novel to read.

Born and raised in Ireland, I’m known for the ‘gift of the gab’ and my friends would definitely describe me as lively and sociable, and I love to strike up conversations with new people. I’m also fiercely competitive when it comes to board games (Trivial Pursuit is my favourite!). I’d like to think that people find me trustworthy, empathetic, and always there to lend an ear, and I’m always the first in line to babysit whenever our friends or family have a new arrival.

Interests and hobbies

Plants, plants and more plants! (I have a special fondness for cacti and succulents, but any houseplant is welcome!)

I love plugging into a good podcast and going for runs, and also going to the gym regularly to keep in decent shape.

Avid reader, and Barry and I love visiting independent bookstores for a new haul.

I love to cook, and am particularly proud of my Neopolitan-style pizzas I’ve learned to craft on a super hot pizza stone!

Level-headed and great in a crisis, but I also love to unwind with some (bad) karaoke. I’m lifelong friends with my gang from High School, we’ve all grown up alongside each other, and now they’ve welcomed Barry into the fold, and it’s like he’s always been part of it. I’m also fond of a bad ‘Dad’ joke, not sure how much my friends appreciate that!
