About them

We’re Cait and Joe, two professors with two cats who are ready to grow our family. We love travel, live music, and being active. After a long road to get here, we’re hopeful and excited to build a friendship with the person who will help bring our baby into the world.

Relationship status

Life partner

We’re both professors in the same department, and our first meeting was defiintely not love at first sight. Cait was interviewing for a job, and Joe, who had recently joined the department, was eager to prove he could be a tough interviewer. Cait still has her notes from that first encounter: “Doesn’t like me, asked questions designed to trip me up, thinks I don’t know how to do statistics.” Thankfully, first impressions aren’t everything! Once Cait was hired, we quickly became friends-- and these days, Joe comes to Cait for statistics advice.

For the first couple of years, our friendship largely involved Cait giving Joe relationship advice, from helping curate his Bumble profile to setting him up with a friend (with disastrous results). With time, they realized there might be a spark, and the rest is history! Our life together has been filled with intellectual debates (we are academics in the same field, after all!), concerts, adventures abroad, and plenty of laughter.

Financial preparedness

We understand that surrogacy is a significant commitment, and we want to make sure our surrogate feels financially secure and fully supported throughout the process. We have planned for the financial responsibilities involved in surrogacy, including compensation, medical expenses, insurance, legal fees, and other pregnancy-related costs. We also recognize that unexpected expenses can arise, and we are committed to approaching those situations with transparency and flexibility. We have money set aside in a dedicated account to make sure other unexpected expenses don't impact our budget. Our goal is for our surrogate to feel that she can focus on her health and well-being, knowing that we have taken our responsibilities seriously and are prepared to support her throughout this journey.

The relationship we hope to build

More than anything, we hope to find someone kind and excited to help us build our family. We value honesty and open communication, and we’d love a relationship where everyone feels comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and celebrating milestones together. We hope to be present at the birth, but we’ll always respect your needs and boundaries.

We’re open to working with someone who has been a gestational carrier before or someone experiencing it for the first time. What matters most is finding the right fit: someone who shares our commitment to teamwork and trust, and to bringing a baby into the world in a way that feels positive for everyone involved.

Vaccination information

We expect our surrogate to follow the recommendations of her OB and our fertility clinic, including flu, COVID-19, and other vaccines recommended during pregnancy. We’re happy to talk through vaccination history and individual medical considerations with guidance from medical professionals.

Views on termination

This is a difficult topic, but one we believe is important to discuss honestly from the beginning. Having experienced the termination of a much-wanted pregnancy because of a serious genetic abnormality, we know firsthand how heartbreaking these decisions can be. We pursued PGT-A testing to reduce the likelihood of facing a similar situation again, but we understand that genetic testing cannot eliminate every risk.

We would consider termination if prenatal testing identified a serious fetal abnormality and would make these decisions in consultation with our medical team. We recognize that termination is a deeply personal decision, and we would want to work with a surrogate whose views are compatible with ours on this issue before beginning treatment.

Fun facts about me

I’ve been to all 7 continents and more countries than years I am old. In 2023, I completed a life goal of running for elected office, and I won! I’ve served on my local Board of Education ever since. I’m also extremely knowledgeable about the TV show Survivor.

Interests and hobbies

Travel is my biggest passion. I feel most alive when I'm learning new things, exploring new places, meeting new people, and appreciating new cultures. I try to take two international trips a year, and I am very much a planner (think 40-page itineraries!). The planning is part of the joy for me- I get to do a deep dive to learn everything I can about a place before I even arrive.

Singing is a close second. I sing with a community choir and I'm at regular at my local dive bar's karaoke night. I love performing and expressing myself through music.

I'm also an avid reader. Whether I'm escaping into a good novel or learning something new through nonfiction, I love a book that introduces me to a new perspective. And if I can read with my cats curled up on my lap, even better!

Fun facts about me

If you see me with headphones in, there's a strong chance it's Scandinavian metal, post rock, or French pop. My parents were military, and we lived in 5 states and England. For the last 10 years, I’ve baked two loaves of sourdough every week: one for us, and one to give to friends.

Interests and hobbies

I’m a cyclist with bikes for every terrain (road, gravel, snow), and I enjoy coming somewhere in the middle of the pack for a few races per year. I've completed a couple of century (100+ mile) rides and have a long-term goal of biking the perimeter of Lake Michigan in segments. I also play guitar.

What friends say
“

Quiet, kind, and a great listener. I’m intentional and driven. I love intellectual conversations and am known for sending a few too many Instagram reels.
