About them

Hi! We’re Laura and Adam, a married couple from Toronto who are hoping to become parents and are looking for the incredible person who might help us make that dream possible.

We’ve been together for nine years and married for three. We’ve built a warm, busy, happy life together with our two dogs in Toronto’s West End, surrounded by an enormous group of friends and a close-knit circle of people who feel more like family.

We both always knew we wanted children. Unfortunately, Laura is unable to safely carry a pregnancy because doing so would pose a potentially life-threatening risk to her health. After navigating that difficult reality, we are incredibly grateful to have another path to parenthood. We currently have three genetically tested embryos stored with Pollin Fertility, and we are now looking for a gestational surrogate to help us bring one of them into the world.

Relationship status

Married

Our story started online in 2017, when we met and quickly realized we had found something pretty special. Actually, technically we started talking before pulling back and dating other people for a few months. By the end of 2017 I (Laura) got a timid text saying, "Heyyyyy...not sure if you remember me....this is Adam", and the rest was history.

We built our relationship over the next few years, and at the beginning of the COVID pandemic, we took the next big step and moved in together in Liberty Village. It was a strange time to start living together, but it gave us the chance to really settle into life as a team. Big risk, big reward. Not long after, we got our first puppy, Indigo, who absolutely thrived in lockdown—although she did develop a little anxiety along the way! In 2021, we bought our first home together in the Junction and have worked hard to make it a cozy, welcoming place that feels like ours.

Adam proposed in the summer of 2022 at the family cottage, pulling off a fantastic surprise with the help of our best friends. And we got married in August of 2023 at the Liberty Grand in Toronto. It was one of the most beautiful days and we were surrounded by so many friends and family!

A second dog later, our love continues to thrive and grow, and in some ways, navigating this fertility journey has strengthened it. We are very grateful now to be looking down the next arm of our journey, and excited to see where it goes.

Financial preparedness

We currently are in a comfortable position to take our next steps, and we are also fortunate to have family who are eager to help. We would be covering any surrogacy related expenses and costs, including additional childcare, personal and travel expenses for appointments, and our surrogates legal representation.

A full breakdown of coverage would be something we would all discuss as a group, as this is a partnership.

(Laura definitely believes that if you want to get regular massages or get your nails did, we got you covered)

Embryos
Yes.

We have three teeny beans chilling out at Pollin Fertility in Toronto, Ontario. Our IVF doctor has assured us that they are comfy, each in their own little tube, and that the embryologist actually talks to all the embryos all the time.

What they're looking for
Their hopes and requirements for a surrogate
Requirements

The right surrogate for us would ideally be between the ages of 25 and 40 and in good physical and mental health. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who feels like the right fit for this very special journey — someone kind, caring, and comfortable taking this on with us.

We would need someone who has previously had a successful live birth, with the dream scenario being someone who feels their own family is complete. ❤️

A few of the practical requirements from the fertility clinic are:

  • Any previous pregnancies would need to have been healthy and without significant complications.

  • No more than five previous C-sections.

And then there’s the bit I (Laura) really don’t love talking about, because you are so much more than a number on a scale. Unfortunately, fertility clinics do have BMI guidelines that we need to work within. Ideally, our surrogate would have a BMI between 19 and 35.

We know these criteria can feel a little clinical, especially when what we’re really looking for is a wonderful human being. But we promise we’re not trying to create a perfect checklist. We’re simply trying to find someone who is medically suitable and, hopefully, feels excited and comfortable about being part of our little team. 💕

The relationship we hope to build

Personality-wise, we’re looking for someone who is warm, open, honest, and comfortable with communication. You absolutely do not need to tell us about your poops (we promise!), but we would really value regular check-ins and updates throughout the journey. And equally, we want you to feel that you can come to us with any questions, worries, concerns - or even if you just want to chat. We love chatting.

We’re also hoping to find someone who enjoys a fairly active lifestyle, takes good care of their mental health, and makes an effort to keep stress to a minimum. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who is genuinely altruistic and understands what an incredible gift they would be giving us.

This is a big journey to take together, so it’s really important to us that we naturally get along and feel comfortable around each other. We like to think we're pretty cool. We’re kind, we love to laugh, and we’re probably a little bit weird (in a good way). Adam is very much the glue that holds our family together. Laura likes to joke that she is the personality hire in the marriage. Adam can tell you how to change a tire or make a beef Wellington from scratch, following a recipe with military precision. Laura, meanwhile, makes up little songs about the dogs, likes to fart around in the garden, and considers recipes to be more of a general suggestion than a set of instructions.

We don’t expect our surrogate to be exactly like us. But we’d love someone who feels comfortable being themselves around us, who enjoys a laugh, and who feels that we’re people they would genuinely like to share this extraordinary experience with. ❤️

Vaccination information

We are firmly pro-vaccine! We are both up to date on all vaccines, including Covid, and will be fully vaccinating any future children. To us, this is the responsible thing to do and in both the child's best interest, as well as the broader public interest.

We understand that there are those with differing opinions on this, however we would require any surrogate to be on the same page as us regarding vaccines, and to be fully okay with the child being vaccinated throughout their life.

Views on termination

At the end of the day, we firmly believe in a persons right to choose when it comes to their body, including whether to terminate a pregnancy. However, we also realize that this is a bit murky when it comes to surrogacy, as it would be YOUR body carrying OUR baby. As such, we would have very clear terms laid out by our fertility lawyer, to avoid any future issues.

Overall, your health comes first. You are giving us the gift of life and family, and we are endlessly in your debt. We would terminate the pregnancy should there be any significant risk to your health - full stop! Any other termination decisions would be medically informed and agreed upon on, as a group.

Fun facts about me

I enjoy building and refinishing furniture! We have many pieces in our home that are upcycled street or Facebook Marketplace finds, and I love tackling custom built in projects for our home. My family cottage is also filled with tables, benches, and even a bed that I built. It's so satisfying to create something practical and beautiful with my own two hands.

Interests and hobbies

I’m happiest when I’m creating something, whether that’s making our house feel like home, working in the garden, building a window seat, or trying out a new recipe in the kitchen. I’ve always had a natural eye for design, and I love decorating, gardening, and finding little ways to make our home feel warm and inviting.

Adam and I love cooking together and exploring different cuisines, and I’m always up for a board game or card game with friends—even if I can get a little competitive! I also love spending time outdoors, especially at my family’s island in Northern Ontario. Swimming, canoeing, relaxing by the water, and spending time with family there are some of my favourite things.

And, of course, a big part of my free time is dedicated to Indigo and Hazel. I hand-groom both dogs and lovingly repair their stuffed animals when they inevitably get ripped. I call it the “pawspital,” and I take my job as their veterinarian very seriously. 🐾

For me, the best days are usually the simple ones: good food, good friends, a beautiful space, a little time outside, and the people—and dogs—I love most.

What friends say
“

My friends would describe me as caring and kind. I'm always willing to sit down with someone to hear life updates or give advice. They would also likely say that in another life, I could have done stand up. I love making everyone around me laugh! I have strong family values, and am always the first to volunteer to look after a friends human or animal child.

Fun facts about me

I’m a lifelong fan of Survivor - so much so that I’ve actually applied to be on the show not once, but twice! I’m currently considering putting in a third application, because apparently I haven’t learned my lesson yet. I recently introduced Laura to Survivor as well, and she’s officially been pulled into the cult of Jeff Probst. It’s become one of our favourite things to watch together, and we love discussing the strategy, characters, and inevitable questionable decisions.

Interests and hobbies

I love music and play guitar, and I enjoy spending time outdoors, whether I’m working in our garden, relaxing in our backyard oasis with Laura, or firing up the barbecue. I take a lot of pride in cooking for family and friends, and Laura and I love trying new recipes and exploring cuisines from around the world.

I love travelling, although I do a bit less now than I used to. The Swiss Alps are a particular favourite of mine, and were the first place that Laura and I travelled to. In lieu of mountain climbing, I enjoy indoor rock climbing and bouldering - each route is a puzzle that just needs to be solved.

But one of my favourite things is being a dog dad. It took a bit of a nudge to get each dog, but now I’m completely devoted to Indigo and Hazel, and I have a nightly ritual of making sure both girls are tucked in before we turn out the lights. They may technically be dogs, but they’re very much my girls. 🐾

At the end of the day, I’m happiest spending time with the people I love—whether that’s having friends over for a barbecue, playing music, getting competitive over a board game, or simply relaxing with Laura and the dogs.

What friends say
“

My friends would describe me as loyal, responsible, and dependable. The person who always has a plan and can be counted on to follow through. I’m goal-oriented and driven, but I also really value being there for the people I care about. I’m a great listener and try to be someone my friends can come to when they need support, advice, or simply someone to hear them out.
